One of the greatest ways to connect with families is to show them you’re really in their corner.
You can tell families, “We are in your corner!”, but they will always wonder – “Do they really mean it?”
Without adding a ton more work into your schedule (I know you’re busy!), or a bunch more expenses into your budget category (I know your $$ is stretched tight!) – here are some great ideas to show families you really care:
- Pick up a mini bottle of hand sanitizer & attach a note that says: “To get you through the school year!” If you have a little more budget, consider putting together mini kits that include a mask, sanitizer & wipes for families to keep in their cars or porches.
- Ask older church families to pick up some classic school snacks (granola bars, fruit leather, Goldfish crackers, fruit cups, etc.) and place them all on a table the next time you meet in person! Put a sign on them that says “Pick your favourite snack to get you through the week!” and allow families to grab one on the way out.
- Most parents love coffee/tea/another yummy beverage. Pick up some coffee coupons (Pro Tip: Some local coffee chains will donate certificates for 1 free hot beverage in bulk to non-profits!) and give them to parents with a note that says: “You can make it through this week!” If you want to go the extra mile (and you don’t have a ton of parents), consider dropping hot beverages off on their doorstep on the first day of school or another significant milestone!
- Send home devotionals that are easy-to-use and simple (maybe like this Back to School Survival Guide) for parents! Touch base with them on social media or via text during the week you’ve sent it out to let them know you’re praying for them as they lead their families spiritually.
- Ask parents what they need this fall. Consider sending out a fall ministry survey or more informally, just asking parents – “What do you need from me right now!?” Showing you’re interested in what they have to say can go far!
- Send home a handwritten note to all your parents – via their kids or in the mail to let them know you’re in the corner. We want to help you get started with that, so here’s a free postcad you can print, sign and send out to your parents THIS week!
No matter what you choose to do this fall, I hope these ideas have got you thinking about how you can cheer families on! We’d love to see you using these postcards in your ministry – so shoot me an email or tag us on Instagram at @equip.family.
