Our local church recently held its’ first water baptism service since before the pandemic.
We practice baptism by immersion – and I love water baptism services (I always have!) – and the joy they bring to our church family.
This service was a little different for me though – as I knew my two kiddos (especially my five-year-old!) would be in the congregation carefully observing.
That is why I was so excited to receive my friend, Glenys Nellist’s, new book “Baptized in the Water.”
This beautifully illustrated & written book was the perfect conversation starter with my little guy – to talk about baptism, what it represents, and what to expect in our church service.
Glenys’ book talks about baptism as an essential part of every church family – starting with the example of Jesus.
The book illustrates various modes of baptism as well that are practiced by different churches.
If this creates hesitation for you, don’t let it! Christians are becoming increasingly polarized from each other – but this book illustrates beautifully the diversity of Christian tradition throughout history – and even today.
The various modes of baptism illustrated in the book led my son & I to have a great conversation about why our church baptizes by immersion, our practice of child dedication, and what he could expect in our Water Baptism service!
“God’s love pours over us, just like the water.”
As we headed into our Water Baptism service, I felt confident that this book had provided a fabulous teaching tool for my kids – my son knew why water baptism mattered – and it led us to a beautiful conversation, filled with questions!
This book now resides on my son’s bookshelf, and he will occasionally ask “Can we read the baptism book again?” I love that this is a story he asks for – and I know it will be one your kids ask for too!
If you really want to take things a step further, I’d encourage you to check out the Downloadable Activity Pack that Glenys & her team created! There are some beautiful discussion starters & coloring sheets for kids of all ages!
