Christmas is just around the corner!

Every year, I get messages from children’s pastors & parents asking – “What Christmas books are you recommending?”

I have a bit (okay, a lot!) of a book problem, and for the past couple of years, I’ve done an “Advent Book Calendar” for my kids!

This means I have a great collection of Christmas books at my house – and for 2020, I have 10 I’d like to share with you!

These books could work great as:

I absolutely love Advent (check out some of the resources from Equip Family for this season here!). Here are two of my favourite books for Advent:

Advent Storybook by Antonie Schneider

This is the first year we’ve used this book, and I’m really excited about it! It has 25 short stories that are related to Advent. It’s the perfect length for little ones (toddlers & preschoolers!) and will make your Advent season more meaningful.

Unwrapping the Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp

This is an absolutely beautiful book. Ann Voskamp has a way with words like no other. She will walk your family through “the Jesse Tree’ – the family tree of Jesus.

The Ballad of Matthew’s Begats by Andrew Peterson

This book isn’t for the faint-of-heart, but it’s so fun! It goes through the family tree of Jesus – and the accompanying song is SO fun! It’s based in Matthew 1, and a great way to talk about Jesus’ humanity!

Jesus Calling: The Story of Christmas by Sarah Young

This book is new to our collection this year, and we love it so far! It starts at the beginning of time, and traces God’s perfect redemption plan – and the pictures are beautiful!

Good News! It’s Christmas! by Glenys Nellist

The lovely Glenys Nellist gifted us this book last year when it was released, and it quickly became a family favourite! The illustrations are gorgeous (and authentic), and the text is simple and impactful for my baby & preschooler!

This is the Stable by Cynthia Cotten

I love this style of story – simple, repetitive and focused on the first Christmas. Your kids will love these illustrations, and it’s great for early or independent readers (and smaller kids too!).

God Gave Us Christmas by Lisa Tawn Bergren

If Santa is a big deal to your little ones, this is the book for you! It doesn’t answer any of the “Is Santa real?” questions, but points to the fact that Christmas is really about Jesus! It’s a great story!

The Stable Where Jesus Was Born by Rhonda Gowler Greene

I love these stories that are in the style of the classic “This is the house that Jack built…” The way that this lovely, classic story works through the tale of the first Christmas in such a poetic way is fun for families from the youngest to the oldest!

The Legend of St. Nicholas by Dandi Daley Mackall

My little guy is obsessed with Santa – and we’re not sure why! Trying to keep Santa in proper perspective isn’t easy, but this book is a great way to help with that! It tells the true story of St. Nicholas in a kid-friendly way, with lots of focus on giving & generosity!

One Night in Bethlehem by
Jill Roman Lord

This book is so much fun! Touch-and-feel books are great for the littlest kids in your life – and this is a great one! It talks about the many gifts that you could give to Jesus, and reminds kids they can give to Jesus too!
